Seeking help is a sign of strength.
It takes courage to take that first step. Many times, people seek therapy when they feel burdened by sadness, anxiety or troubled relationships. They decide they are ready to bring about change in their lives and to seek guidance in doing so. Often they see that their patterns of relationships–either with themselves or others–have stopped working for them. As human beings, we tend to keep repeating patterns with which we are familiar. We may not even completely understand what these patterns are or how they are holding us back; we only know our life isn’t going the way we anticipated and are troubled by this.
A skilled therapist can help us discover these patterns and identify techniques we can learn in order to change. For this to happen, the therapist must provide a compassionate space where we can express our thoughts and feelings, no matter what they are, so as to develop the solutions we are seeking. A good therapist combines understanding and support as well as brings education and skills to help each individual in their unique journey. In therapy, everything is confidential and folks can speak freely knowing they will be respected.
Therapy can be challenging, comforting, hopeful. Many of my clients tell me that it is well worth the effort it takes. Sometimes only a few sessions are needed for folks to obtain their goals!
